Trump tariffs continue to rattle nations across the globe, including close allies. Over the last few days, Trump has sent tariff letters to over two dozen countries. This includes 35% tariff on neighbor, decades-old ally and USMCA partner Canada. Close Asian allies Japan and South Korea face 25% tariffs.
On Saturday, President Trump threatened to impose a 30% tariff on imports from Mexico and the EU starting on 01 August, after weeks of negotiations with the key US allies and top trading partners failed to result in a comprehensive trade deal. Both the EU and Mexico responded by calling the tariffs unfair and disruptive while pledging to continue to negotiate with the U.S. for a broader deal before the August deadline.
Trade negotiations with India are in progress. The UK and Vietnam have had a trade deal with the U.S.
Trump has threatened 50% tariffs on Brazil if it doesn’t stop the Bolsonaro “witch hunt” trial. President Lula has vowed to reciprocate if Trump follows through on this threat.
Unlike, the other two dozen countries that have received letters from Trump last week, the US has a trade surplus with Brazil.
These rates would be separate from all sectoral tariffs. Trump said “a letter means a deal.” Trump has encouraged world leaders to manufacture goods in the US to avoid tariffs.
Trump has also announced a 50% tariff on copper import. All these tariffs are effective August 1, 2025. Trump has threatened to raise tariffs even higher than specified rates if a country retaliated against the US with tariffs of their own.
