Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to rise despite an extended US-mediated ceasefire, reflecting the fragile security situation along the Israel-Lebanon border. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Sgt. Idan Fooks, a 19-year-old soldier from Petah Tikva who served in the 7th Armored Brigade’s 77th Battalion, was killed on Sunday after a Hezbollah explosive-laden drone struck troops operating near the southern Lebanese town of Taybeh.
Hezbollah later claimed responsibility for the attack, describing it as retaliation for what it called ongoing Israeli ceasefire violations.
Rising Use of Advanced Drone Warfare
The latest attack reflects Hezbollah’s increasing use of first-person view (FPV) explosive drones, including systems guided through fiber-optic cables designed to avoid electronic jamming. Security analysts have warned that such technology presents new operational challenges for military forces operating in contested border regions.
According to an initial IDF probe cited by Israeli media, a tank from Fooks’ battalion became stuck near Taybeh in southern Lebanon. As troops worked to repair it, a Hezbollah drone packed with explosives struck beside them. An Israeli Air Force helicopter was sent to evacuate the wounded, and Hezbollah launched two additional drones during the evacuation. Lebanese media reported casualties and infrastructure damage following the strikes, including damage to residential buildings, religious structures, and transportation routes. Smoke was seen rising from several locations in the Nabatieh region after the Israeli operations intensified.
