Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is facing a growing political crisis after a leaked phone call with Cambodia’s former leader Hun Sen triggered public outrage, protests, and the collapse of her ruling coalition.
In the call, Paetongtarn, daughter of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, referred to a border clash and appeared to sideline Thailand’s military stance. The backlash was swift. Her key ally, Bhumjaithai Party, quit the coalition, cutting her majority in Parliament and reviving fears of a military intervention.
Thailand’s opposition and street protests are demanding her resignation. Analysts believe that with coalition cracks deepening and trust in her leadership waning, she could be ousted by courts, political realignment, or even a coup.
The border dispute with Cambodia, slow economic recovery, and rising public distrust are creating what experts call a “perfect storm.” With U.S. tariffs returning and investor confidence shaking, the timing couldn’t be worse.
Is Thailand heading for another political reset?
