No Kings Day Protests: What Businesses Need to Know

Over 1,500 protests “No Kings Day” are planned across the U.S. on Saturday, 14 June coinciding with the Trump Administration’s military parade in Washington DC marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. No protests have been planned in Washington DC to avoid any direct confrontation. The organizers have called for protests to be peaceful.

Summer of Dissent

The planned protests – originally announced last month – will follow days of demonstrations in Los Angeles (L.A.) over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids targeting undocumented immigrants. Though the situation in L.A. is not directly involved with the “No Kings Day” protest, it could act as a catalyst. The protests have already galvanized similar protests in a few other cities – heightening the risk of a “long summer of dissent.” Any injuries or accidental deaths, social media amplification and deep polarization can lead to the worsening of the situation.

Protests across major cities and any escalation could impact businesses, transport, logistics and supply chains. Situations can escalate and create public safety issues. The federal-state stand-off could impact law & order.

Recommended Mitigation Measures

  • Carry out real-time risk monitoring and geofencing of critical assets. Monitor trusted sources and government advisories.
  • Avoid known demonstration sites as the situation can escalate rapidly.
  • Align with local law enforcement and security agencies.
  • Employees may like to protest to express their 1st amendment rights. Important to communicate proactively with employees and emphasize the need for personal safety and precautions to follow and how to seek support in emergencies.
