Protests Erupt in Indonesia Over Parliamentary Privileges and Austerity Measures
On 25 August, thousands of students, workers, and activists protested in Indonesia against a new monthly housing allowance for members of parliament, which is significantly higher than the minimum wage. The demonstrations also targeted government austerity measures and policies perceived to benefit “corrupt elites” and the military. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds, who attempted to breach the parliament building. The protests may signal a new level of public dissent toward the current government.
