Turkey is expected to host the COP31 climate summit in 2026 following Australia’s decision to withdraw its bid to host the event. The decision was finalised after discussions between Australia’s climate change minister Chris Bowen and Turkey’s climate minister Murat Kurum at the COP30 conference currently being held in Brazil. As a compromise, a pre-COP event is expected to be held in the Pacific and Australia will act as the president of negotiations, aiming to shed focus on the effects of climate change on the Pacific region.
