Portugal's Azores on Extreme Weather Alert as Cyclone Gabrielle Approaches
On 25 September, Portugal’s Azores archipelago was placed on red alert by the meteorological agency IPMA. This is the highest emergency level, used only for weather events carrying extreme risk. Post-Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle is approaching, bringing high winds, heavy rain, and dangerous storm surge. Authorities have cancelled all tourist and recreational activities, closed schools and urged people to stay indoors. Non-essential public services on the Western and Central islands are closed from 1800 on 25 September for 24 hours. Significant disruptions to supply chains are expected, requiring travel restrictions and heightened emergency preparedness.
