Iraq and Turkey Sign Water Cooperation Agreement
Iraq and Turkey signed a critical accord in Baghdad on 02 November to implement their 2024 water cooperation agreement signed during Turkish President Erdoğan’s visit to Iraq. It addresses Iraq’s severe water scarcity. According to the agreement, Iraq would form a committee for water infrastructure projects, which would be financed by revenue from Iraqi oil sales to Turkey, and invite bids from Turkish companies. The initial batches include three dams and three land reclamation initiatives. This arrangement signals a significant de-escalation of long-standing geopolitical tensions between the two countries over shared water resources and reflects a shared commitment towards sustainable water use.
