Guinea Announces First Post-Coup Presidential Vote

On 28 September, Guinea’s military government, which took power in a 2021 coup, announced the date for the country’s first post-coup presidential election as 28 December 2025. This decision followed the validation of a new constitution via referendum. The new charter abolishes the transitional law that barred coup leader Mamady Doumbouya from seeking office and extends the presidential term to seven years. Doumbouya has not confirmed his candidacy. The holding of elections is a key step in the nation’s political transition but carries heightened risk for political stability, particularly given Guinea’s significance as a major global source of bauxite and iron ore.
