Floods Deepen Rift Over Grand Ethiopian Dam
Since 05 October, rising Nile waters have flooded homes and fields in northern Egypt and displaced more than 1,200 families in Sudan since last week. Cairo blames Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) for the surge, calling it a “man-made, late flood.” Officials accuse Addis Ababa of releasing up to 780 million cubic meters of water in a “reckless unilateral” move. Ethiopia denies the charge, saying the dam actually reduced flooding. Inaugurated on 09 September, the GERD has been bitterly opposed by Egypt, which argues it violates century-old water treaties and poses an existential threat.
