Ethiopia officially inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on 09 September, marking a major milestone for the Blue Nile project. The GERD is Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam and is expected to generate over 5,000 megawatts of power. Ethiopia views GERD as central to its economic ambitions and a major step toward becoming a regional power exporter. However, the project continues to be a source of significant tension with downstream nations, Sudan and Egypt, who fear for their water security.
