Curfew Imposed in Madagascar’s Capital After Violent Protests
On 25 September, authorities in Madagascar imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the capital, Antananarivo, after protests over persistent water and electricity cuts turned violent. These cuts often leave homes and businesses without power for over 12 hours. The demonstration, mainly led by youth, initially gained traction on social media. To disperse protesters, police used tear gas and rubber bullets. The demonstrators barricaded roads with burning tyres and rocks. The unrest also resulted in looting, as well as arson attacks on property, including a shopping mall and politicians’ homes. Rooted in socioeconomic grievances, the unrest raises security risks.
