Bulgaria: Government Withdraws Budget Plans After Protests

Bulgaria Government Withdraws Budget Plans
The Bulgarian government withdrew its proposed budget plan on 02 December following massive protests in Sofia and other cities. The demonstrations were primarily fuelled by concerns over the budget increasing taxes and social security contributions, and persistent issues of corruption. Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov’s government has stated that it will initiate a new budgetary procedure, which could delay parliamentary decisions. Protests may also continue as the opposition party continues to call for the government to resign.
