The US has warned that it may impose additional tariffs on India if peace talks between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin fail to produce a peace deal in Ukraine. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that existing secondary tariffs on India for buying Russian oil could increase if the meeting in Alaska on Friday does not go well. India is already facing a 50% tariff on its exports to the US, a combination of a 25% baseline tariff and a 25% additional tariff on crude oil trade with Russia. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has called the US actions “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” defending its oil imports as necessary for the energy security of its 1.4 billion people.
