US Revokes Sanctions Waiver for Iran’s Chabahar Port
The US State Department has revoked the 2018 sanctions waiver for Iran’s Chabahar Port, effective from 29 September. The waiver had allowed India to pursue development work at the port without risk of US penalties. The move, part of Washington’s “maximum pressure” policy on Tehran, could open Indian operators to sanctions. For India, Chabahar is a strategic gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia, and New Delhi has already made investments amounting to USD 120 million. The revocation complicates India’s diplomatic balance with Washington and Tehran, at a time when US-India ties are strained by tariff disputes.
