The United States has begun talks with Russia and China on a potential multilateral nuclear arms control treaty, following the expiration of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) between the US and Russia on 05 February. US and Russian delegates met in Geneva on 23 February, and talks with the Chinese delegates are scheduled on 24 February. The US seeks to include China in the new treaty, claiming that China has expanded its nuclear arsenal. However, China has refused the claims and previously rejected calls for a trilateral treaty. It remains unclear if the discussions would lead to concrete steps towards a nuclear treaty.
