Undersea Cable Cuts Disrupt Internet in Asia and Middle East
Internet connectivity in parts of Asia and the Middle East has been disrupted following damage to several undersea cables in the Red Sea. The outages, which were reported on 07 September, are affecting major cable systems like the SEA-ME-WE 4 (SMW4) and the India-Middle East-Western Europe (IMEWE). The incident has resulted in slower internet speeds and increased latency for users in several countries, including India and Kuwait. While the cause is unconfirmed, some reports have speculated about the involvement of Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who have denied responsibility. Companies like Microsoft have rerouted traffic to minimize disruptions, but repairs could take weeks.
