A new student-led political party, the National Citizen Party (NCP), held a rally in Dhaka, pledging to build a “new Bangladesh” with a new constitution on 03 August. The rally took place two days before the one-year anniversary of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ousting. Separately, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) also held a rally. Both rallies reflect the shifting political landscape under the interim government of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, which is tasked with restoring order and preparing for elections following a mass uprising that ended Hasina’s 15-year rule. The country faces concerns about a stable transition to democracy amid a fractured political landscape and the emergence of new political actors.
