Nepal: RSP Wins Majority in General Elections
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), led by former Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, has secured a majority in Nepal’s general election, winning 124 seats through direct vote and 58 seats through proportional representation as of the early hours of 09 March. The general election comes after the student-led protests in September 2025, which led to the resignation of the previous government headed by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. This is the first time in decades that a single party has won a majority in the country. The RSP is also just two seats short of securing a two-thirds majority in the parliament. The final election result is expected to be announced within the next few days.
