Multiple Casualties due to Heavy Snowfall in Japan
Persistent heavy snowfall over the last few days has caused severe disruptions and at least 35 casualties in northern Japan. As of 04 February, 15 prefectures were affected, with some areas recording up to two meters of snow. The snow has significantly disrupted travel, with blocked roads and train lines. Power lines were also affected, leaving more than 1,700 homes without electricity. Authorities have also warned regarding potential avalanches and falling snow mounds. Self-Defence Forces have been deployed to clear drifts and accumulated snow. The cold weather is expected to continue throughout the weekend, leading to further snowfall.
