Kazakhstan is scheduled to hold a referendum on a new constitution on 15 March. The new proposals aim to streamline Kazakhstan’s parliament by replacing two chambers with one, reducing the number of lawmakers, and reinstating the office of vice president, which was abolished in 1996. The constitutional changes could also allow President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to extend his term in office. President Tokayev is currently limited to a seven-year term till 2029, but he could serve a new term under the new constitution.
