The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, achieved a landslide victory in the snap election on 08 February. The LDP won 316 out of the 465 seats in the lower parliamentary house, marking it as the best result for the party so far and a significant turnaround since its loss of majority in 2024. The coalition of the LDP and the Japan Innovation Party won 352 seats in the parliament, achieving a supermajority. The coalition’s supermajority is likely to help PM Takaichi to pass legislative changes, including tax cuts and military spending, as she could override the upper parliamentary house.
