The eastern coast of Japan’s Aomori Prefecture was struck by a 6.9 Magnitude earthquake on 12 December, just a few days after the area was affected by a 7.5 Magnitude earthquake. The quake resulted in 20 cm high tsunami waves in parts of Hokkaido and Aomori prefectures and three aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 4.5 to 5.7. Thousands of residents in Mutsu city received evacuation orders. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami advisory for the country’s northern Pacific coast, which was lifted after a few hours. Since the 7.5 Magnitude earthquake on 08 December, authorities have asked people to remain on high alert for a potential megaquake.
