Authorities in Australia warned of heatwaves and catastrophic fire conditions in several parts of the country. A catastrophic fire danger rating indicates that potential blazes could be ‘unpredictable and uncontrollable’. Severe to extreme heatwave conditions have been declared in every state and territory except Queensland. The extreme temperatures have also led to several bushfires in Victoria and New South Wales. Considering the weather conditions, the Hume Freeway was closed and regional V/line train and bus services in affected areas will be cancelled on 09 January. The high temperatures are expected to persist in the upcoming days.
