Incessant rainfall triggered numerous landslides and flash floods in India’s Darjeeling hills, resulting in at least 23 confirmed deaths. The deluge, exacerbated by river overflow from Bhutan and Sikkim, caused critical infrastructure damage, including the collapse of two iron bridges and blockage of key national highways (NH-10), cutting off Darjeeling and Sikkim. The disaster has also severely impacted neighbouring Nepal, where related floods and landslides have claimed at least 52 lives, primarily in the worst-hit eastern district of Ilam. Rescue efforts are ongoing for hundreds of stranded tourists as authorities face warnings of continued heavy rainfall across the region.
