An outbreak of the chikungunya virus in China’s Guangdong province has been worsened by the peak of the East Asian monsoon season. With over 7,000 cases reported since July, the city of Foshan has implemented mandatory hospitalization for confirmed patients. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 travel alert. Officials have launched aggressive mosquito control campaigns, including fines for failing to remove stagnant water, and the deployment of mosquito-eating fish and “elephant mosquitoes.” The heavy rainfall and resulting stagnant floodwaters have created ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, threatening to further fuel the outbreak.
