Canada, India Agree to Restart Trade Talks
India and Canada agreed to relaunch negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) following a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. This announcement signals a major diplomatic reset after ties deteriorated sharply in 2023, when former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged the Indian government’s involvement in the killing of a Khalistani leader. The ambitious pact aims to double bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030 and includes deepening cooperation in critical sectors such as clean energy, critical minerals, and civil nuclear technology.
