Bangladesh to Hold Elections in February 2026
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, announced that parliamentary elections will be held in February 2026, before the month of Ramadan. This announcement was made on the one-year anniversary of the “July Uprising” that led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024. Yunus’s government also unveiled the “July Declaration,” which aims to provide constitutional recognition to the uprising and reform government institutions. Hasina, who is now in exile, is currently on trial for crimes against humanity in the country. Her party, the Awami League, has been banned from the elections and has criticized the declaration.
