The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured majority seats in the parliament following the general elections in Bangladesh on 12 February. According to latest counts, the coalition led by the BNP won 212 of the 299 parliamentary seats, while the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami led coalition won 70 seats. BNP leader Tarique Rahman is likely to be sworn in as the next prime minister. The BNP’s strong majority is expected to bring political stability and avoid legislative paralysis in the country which faced increased instability after the student led protest and ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024. The new government faces major challenges including restoring economic growth of the country.
