Australia Expels Iran Ambassador Over Antisemitic Attacks
On 26 August, Australia expelled Iran’s ambassador, Ahmad Sadeghi, and three other officials, citing intelligence that Iran directed antisemitic attacks in Melbourne and Sydney. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared the ambassador “persona non grata,” a step not taken since World War II. The attacks, including an arson at a kosher cafe and a synagogue, were described as “extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression.” Additionally, Australia suspended its embassy operations in Tehran and announced plans to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. This action marks a severe deterioration of diplomatic relations.
