Peru’s Congress has voted to impeach interim President Jose Jerifollowing a political scandal over his undisclosed meetings with a Chinese businessman. President Jeri, who took office in October 2025, is the third consecutive president to be ousted from the position. Peru has been facing a long period of political instability, and President Jeri’s impeachment is likely to increase political tensions. The Congress will vote for a new interim president on 18 February until a new president is elected following the general elections scheduled in April.
