Hurricane Melissa Strengthens, Flooding Expected Across North Caribbean
Hurricane Melissa intensified rapidly into a Category Four storm on 26 October, centred south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and is likely to make landfall on 27 or 28 October. The storm is expected to cause torrential rain, severe flash flooding, and landslides across Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Authorities in all threatened nations have issued warnings and activated shelters. Jamaican authorities have warned about potential damage to infrastructure, power, and communication outages, and isolation of communities. The hurricane is expected to move towards Cuba by 28 October and further to the Bahamas by 29 October.
