Chilean President Gabriel Boric declared a state of catastrophe after wildfires burned thousands of acres of forest and caused at least 18 casualties across central and southern Chile. The areas impacted by the wildfires include the Biobío and Ñuble regions. The fires have prompted the evacuations of around 50,000 people. Firefighting operations are ongoing, but are hindered due to strong winds and extreme temperatures. The emergency declaration would allow greater coordination between the military and firefighters to control the fires. President Boris also announced curfews and the establishment of emergency shelters.
