Brazil Blackout Cuts Power to Over 1 Million
On 14 October, a fire at a power substation operated by Brazilian firm Eletrobras in southern Brazil caused a major blackout across the northern, northeastern, southern and central-western regions, resulting in a total shutdown of around 10,000 megawatts and affecting more than 1 million consumers. Brazil’s Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira described the outage as an isolated incident linked to infrastructure, not an energy shortage. Power was gradually restored within hours, but the outage temporarily disrupted operations and logistics. The event underscores the need for stronger investment in grid maintenance and resilience to reduce the risk of similar disruptions.
