Anutin Charnvirakul has been re-elected as Thailand’s prime minister by the country’s new parliament, winning 293 of 498 votes. His re-election comes after his Bhumjaithai party won the parliamentary election in February. The Bhumjaithai party has formed an alliance with the Pheu Thai party and other small parties, controlling 292 out of 499 seats in the parliament. Anutin Charnvirakul must now be formally appointed by Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn, after which a new cabinet will be assembled over the coming weeks. The new cabinet will need to address pressing issues, including the ongoing conflict with Cambodia and the country’s weakened economy.
