Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies has rejected the electoral reform promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The proposal received 259 votes in favour, falling short of the 334 votes required for the reform to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies. The electoral reform, which the ruling Morena party claims will strengthen democracy, includes proposed regulations on the use of artificial intelligence in election campaigns, a reduction in the number of Senate seats, and increased oversight of electoral bodies. Opposition lawmakers have argued that the reform is an attempt by the ruling party to consolidate power.
