The Home Office of the United Kingdom announced that the country will stop issuing student visas to applicants from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan. Additionally, it will also suspend work visas for people from Afghanistan. The decision is an attempt to manage the number of asylum seekers following a surge in asylum claims in recent years and growing concerns regarding immigration. The Home Office stated that the number of asylum applications from the four countries increased by 470 percent between 2021 and 2025. The announcement comes a day after the country’s tightened asylum rules took effect, under which refugee statuses would be reviewed every 30 months.
