Zimbabwe’s Cabinet has endorsed a draft bill that would amend the constitution to extend the presidential term from five to seven years. Other proposals in the draft include extending the term for members of parliament, allowing the president to appoint ten senators to the Senate, and electing the president through a parliamentary vote instead of a direct vote by citizens. The bill will now be sent to the speaker of parliament and debated by lawmakers. If the bill passes, President Emmerson Mnangagwa could remain in office until at least 2030.
