Portuguese Interior Minister Maria Lucia Amaral has resigned after criticisms from opposition parties and local communities over the authorities’ response to the floods caused by Storm Kristin two weeks ago. Her resignation is the first since the minority government took office in June 2025. Prime Minister Luis Montenegro will take over the position until a new interior minister is appointed. Storm Kristin caused widespread damage to infrastructure and caused at least six casualties. According to government estimates, direct reconstruction would require more than EUR four billion.
