Portugal: Antonio Jose Seguro Wins Presidential Election
Antonio Jose Seguro, member of the Socialist Party, has won the second round of Portugal’s presidential election on 08 February. He won 66.7 percent of the total votes, securing a five-year term, and will succeed incumbent President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Antonio Seguro had won the first round of the presidential election but fell short of a majority. The new president’s main challenge would be to maintain political stability, as the country has faced increasing instability amid unstable minority governments. Presidents in Portugal have no executive authority, but they act as mediators to resolve disputes and tensions.
