The military-led government of Burkina Faso has dissolved all political parties, stating that the decision was an effort to ‘rebuild the state’. Burkina Faso’s Interior Minister Emile Zerbo claimed that the country’s multiparty system had caused political divisions and weakened social cohesion. Additionally, a bill that would scrap party statutes, financing rules, and the post of opposition leader will be sent to the transitional council for approval. Political parties in the country were already barred from holding public events since the military seized power in 2022.
