Storm Kristin has caused flooding, landslides, widespread damage, and at least five casualties as it passed through central and northern Portugal. The central district of Leiria was one of the most affected areas in the country. Over 850,000 people faced power outages as the storm damaged utility infrastructure on 28 January. The storm also significantly disrupted transport as motorways and railways were blocked by debris. Civil protection authorities reported over 3,000 weather-related incidents and are continuing disaster management operations. Storm Kristin has moved east towards Spain, prompting the country’s weather agency to issue red alerts in multiple parts.
