Canadian PM Carney to Visit China

Canadian PM Carney to Visit China
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to visit China from 14-17 January, making it the first visit by a Canadian PM to the country since 2017. The visit is a bid by PM Carney to improve trade relations with China and reduce Canada’s dependency on the US amid heightened tensions between the two countries. The bilateral engagement follows a meeting between PM Carney and President Xi in South Korea in October 2025. The leaders will meet on 16 January and are expected to discuss new trade and security partnerships, which could include increased export of Canadian crude oil to China.
