Protests continued across Iran, including Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz and Mashhad, for the second day on 29 December after the country’s currency dropped to a record low against the US dollar. In Tehran, traders and shopkeepers gathered in Saadi Street and the Shush neighbourhood near Grand Bazaar, with police firing tear gas to disperse protestors in some places. The protests mark the largest demonstration in the country since 2022. The currency depreciation comes amid increased inflation and uncertainty regarding a renewed conflict between Iran and Israel. Heightened security measures are likely to be in place as further protests are expected.
