José Antonio Kast won the Chilean presidential election on 14 December, securing 58.2 percent of the vote. His campaign was focused on addressing increased illegal immigration and violence and introducing a platform of free-market policies. His plans include mass deportations, border fortification and cutting fiscal spending by more than USD 06 billion. Despite José Kast’s being elected as the President, his Republican Party lacks a congressional majority, which could lead to resistance to his economic and social reforms.
