Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner announced that the 13th National Parliamentary Election will be held on 12 February 2026, alongside a national referendum on the proposed “July Charter” for institutional reform. This will be the first general election since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after the August 2024 student protests. The election is expected to be a major contest between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, as Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League is currently barred from contesting.
