The head of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has agreed to a unilateral three-month humanitarian truce proposed by the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Saudi Arabia earlier this month. The announcement followed the rejection of the proposal by the Sudanese army on 23 November. The RSF had already announced acceptance of the truce when the proposal was initially proposed, but continued attacks in army-controlled territories. The ceasefire is a significant step towards resolving the conflict, but its implementation could be challenging, given the history of past ceasefire failures and the Sudanese army’s contention.
