Typhoon Halong Approaches Izu Islands with Record Rainfall and Strong Winds
On 09 October, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a special heavy rain emergency warning for the Izu island chain, south of Tokyo. Typhoon Halong struck the region with record rainfall exceeding 280 mm and wind gusts over 250 kph. Residents, especially on Hachijo Island, were urged to evacuate immediately due to life-threatening conditions. The storm has caused major disruptions to ferry and air transport. It also poses high risks of landslides, flooding, and power outages, affecting security and supply chains. One fishing-related fatality has already been reported on the mainland.
