Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina dissolved his government on 29 September in response to widespread, deadly protests over chronic power and water cuts and high poverty. The demonstrations, led primarily by young citizens and inspired by ‘Gen Z’ movements in other nations, represent the most serious political challenge since Rajoelina’s 2023 re-election. The President apologized for the government’s failings and announced that a new government would be formed within three days. According to the United Nations, the accompanying clashes and unrest have resulted in at least 22 fatalities and over 100 injuries.
