Trump Imposes New US Tariffs on Drugs, Trucks, and Furniture
On 25 September, US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs effective from 1 October. Branded or patented pharmaceuticals will face a 100% duty unless the company is building a manufacturing plant in the US. Heavy-duty trucks will be hit with 25%, kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities with 50%, and upholstered furniture with 30%. The move, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing, is one of the sharpest US trade escalations in recent years. Economists warn it will increase inflation, raise healthcare and logistics costs, and cause short-term supply chain disruptions for importers in the affected sectors.
